Topdog raises $2.5M to scale real-time multiplayer skill games

The news: Topdog, the Toast-owned B2C skill-gaming brand, raised $2.5M in seed funding to scale real-time, head-to-head multiplayer games for sports fans. Boston Seed Capital led the round, with Raine Group, Bullpen, Versus VC, Spoondrift Capital, and Permit Ventures participating—bringing Topdog's total raised to $4.1M. Backers include FanDuel co-founder Nigel Eccles, Revenant VC's Ryan Moore, and consultant Dustin Gouker.
Zoom in: Co-founder Aman Agarwal says that live play changes the engagement pattern, especially for younger users: Topdog players average roughly 25 games per day at about 60 seconds each, versus an industry norm of six games at four minutes apiece. "Younger players tend to want faster outcomes," he told BettingStartups. "They will play more games, but they want each one resolved quickly."
Why it matters: The deeper claim is that real-time multiplayer isn't just stickier but more defensible—Agarwal argues live play makes fairness self-evident, something the skill-gaming category has always struggled to prove. If the retention and monetization gains he cites hold up, more of real-money gaming could shift away from solitary score-chasing and toward live, head-to-head competition.
FairPlay strikes deal with Wire Markets, invests in WagerWire

The news: FairPlay Sports Media, the Bruin Capital-backed owner of Oddschecker, has struck a strategic partnership with WagerWire to bring its Wire Markets prediction platform to FairPlay's international sports audiences. As part of the deal, FairPlay also made a strategic investment in WagerWire and can now market and integrate Wire Markets across its media network.
Zoom in: Wire Markets aggregates available order books into a single marketplace and routes trades to the best available price — and has secured approval in principle from HM Government of Gibraltar, only the second company to earn that designation under the jurisdiction's prediction-market framework. WagerWire Group CEO Zach Doctor framed the timing bluntly: "the race is now on to connect these markets with global audiences."
Why it matters: The deal is a bet that media-owned traffic, including the sports fans already researching odds and comparing outcomes, can convert into prediction-market volume without the celebrity endorsements or US regulatory battles consuming Kalshi and Polymarket. For European operators, a Gibraltar approval is a lighter lift than US federal designation, and FairPlay's global reach offers a distribution model rivals will be watching closely.

PixlBet is building a free-to-play prediction game that feels like real-money betting

The news: Maksim Afanasev, a 17-year iGaming veteran who rose to CPO at a B2C operator before a commercial stint at Sportradar, has launched PixlBet, a free-to-play social prediction platform he built largely himself using AI coding tools. What began as a World Cup experiment for friends is now closing on 1,500 users and heading to next week's SBC Summit in Lisbon, where it'll take a stand in the Startup Zone.
Zoom in: PixlBet hands players a ticket for each match and lets them stake it strategically, with points unlocking player-versus-player games and community events like a group-watch football Bingo — the pitch, in Afanasev's words, is to "live the thrill without the bill." He's clear the goal isn't a gambling funnel. "I don't have the goal of converting people into becoming gamblers," he said, arguing free-to-play can be a destination in its own right if it never stops evolving.
Why it matters: The bigger story is how PixlBet gets built, not just what it is. Afanasev argues AI coding erases the corporate roadmap that once took "a lot of time before the idea could get to the point where you would deliver it," and he imagines free-to-play platforms as live playgrounds where betting brands test prototypes overnight. As operators increasingly treat free-to-play as an acquisition funnel, he's making the case the format can stand on its own — with spin-offs like a real-money version of that Bingo game already in development.
